FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about how reference checks work, what they cost and what happens to your information.

Reference checks

Will my former employer know I asked for this?

No. Because we also work with recruiters, attorneys and direct-hire companies, your references are not told who is requesting information about your employment history.

Who will you call?

The references you list after checkout: typically former supervisors, managers or HR departments. Each reference is a separate call and a separate section in your report.

How quickly do you start?

Our staff begins attempts to contact your references by phone within 48 hours of your order. With rush service ($30 per reference), calls start immediately on receipt of your order. Turnaround still depends on your reference’s availability.

How long does it take?

Average turnaround is 10 working days. It depends mostly on how quickly your references respond. Rush service starts the calls immediately, but completion still depends on your reference’s availability.

What’s in my report?

Confirmation of your title and dates of employment, a 15-point performance evaluation rated 1 to 5, and your reference’s word-for-word answers on whether they would recommend you, eligibility for re-hire, reason for separation, and strengths and weaknesses, plus notes on tone and timeliness. Executive reports add questions on attracting and mentoring talent and confirm your last salary. See a sample report.

How do I receive my report?

We email you when it’s ready, and you view it through the secure client login. Telephone or fax reports are available for $10 each.

Who should I list as references?

Former supervisors and managers who know your work, and the HR department. Prospective employers don’t always stick to the names you give them, so it’s worth checking anyone at a former employer they’re likely to reach.

What if my reference no longer works there?

Give us the company’s main number and we’ll ask for forwarding information, as a prospective employer would. If your contact has left, a hiring manager may be passed to someone who doesn’t know you, which is worth finding out.

What do I need to give you?

After you pay, you’ll enter each reference’s name, title, company and contact details, plus context like your dates of employment and why you left. You can attach your resume too, which helps us ask the right questions.

Can you check references outside the U.S.?

Yes. Each reference located outside the United States is $30 extra. Please call (800) 890-5645 to confirm availability before ordering.

Can you add custom questions?

Yes, for an additional fee. Call (800) 890-5645 for a quote.

Results & refunds

What if my reference won’t talk or doesn’t call back?

We call and leave a minimum of four messages, over up to five contact attempts. Most prospective employers give up after two or three. If a reference doesn’t respond, follows a no-comment policy or sends us to a third-party vendor, that is what a prospective employer experiences too, and your report documents it.

Can I substitute a different reference?

Yes, if there’s been no response from the original reference and fewer than three contact attempts. You can also ask our staff to stop further calls at any time.

Do you offer refunds?

No. Once a reference has been called, the service has been performed. See the refund policy.

What should I do if I have a bad reference?

You have options. A Cease & Desist letter puts your former employer on notice, and we run a follow-up check a month later. You may also want to speak with an employment attorney; the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) can help you find one.

What is the Reference & Credential Bank?

For $19.99 a year, Allison & Taylor keeps your reference reports active and available. For $29.99 we’ll mail them to prospective employers with a letter explaining your references were certified by an unbiased third party. Learn more.

Cease & desist letters

What does the Cease & Desist service include?

A legal analysis of your unfavorable reference; a drafted, then finalized letter sent via certified mail; a follow-up reference check; and archiving of your references for an additional 12 months.

How much does it cost?

A $425 retainer covers the analysis, the letter, certified mail and the follow-up check. Rush and international letters are $30 extra each. Additional demands on the attorney’s time, such as calls or emails, are billed separately.

Does it work?

Allison & Taylor has provided cease and desist letter services for 30 years, with a documented 99.7% success rate.

How long does it take?

After consulting with the attorney, you receive a rough draft for approval. Once approved, the letter is sent within one week. A follow-up reference check is conducted after four weeks.

Is there a guarantee?

It’s not possible to offer a guarantee or refund for the service.

Who will be named in the letter?

The company representative who gave the negative reference. The reference-checking firm is not named.
